Why did Lowell recruit young women to work in the factory?

Spinning and weaving had long been performed by women in the home and young women were willing to work for half or a third the wages of young men. The daughters of farmers had few economic opportunities. Many workers were needed to work in the factories and the young girls were willing to come and work.
